The British Lions | British Lions Tours | History | The Future British Lions ToursThe British Lions are one of the most popular rugby teams in the entire world. Widely considered to be one of the best of all time, they have competed in countless tours since 1888 through Australia, South Africa and New Zealand. Currently, every four years a tour is done, with the last one taking place in New Zealand in 2005, and the next one in South Africa in 2009. Through all the tours, the team’s matches against local teams have been very successful, with British Lions’ tickets selling out and large crowds coming to see the best players in Ireland, Wales, Scotland and England coming to their country to play in a friendly, albeit at times violent, matches. When the team is on tour, they play mid-week games against local provinces or clubs, while weekend’s are reserved for full tests against the host’s national team. The team has won 16 tours, while losing 21 tours and drawing on one. The longest run of success for the British Lions was from 1891 to 1899, when they won three tours in a row. The most tour losses in a row for the team came between 1977 and 1986. Currently, the team is trying to right the difficulties of the past, where they have won only three wins (1989-France and Australia, 1997-South Africa) between 1977 and 2005, while losing seven tours (1977 to 1986, 1993, 2001 to 2005). SummaryThe British Isle’s tours have been a big draw, often selling out on rugby tickets very quickly. Through their tours of New Zealand, Australia and South Africa, they have helped to bring rugby to millions of other individuals, as well as through their tours of Argentina, Canada and France in years past.
