Lions’ Legends Part One

If there is one thing that the British Lions have a lot of, it is legends. Through their history, dating back to 1888, the team has had some of the best rugby players of all time play for them.
For all of these men, they played for the British Lions with honor and dignity, showing those who buy rugby tickets why they are spending money on the team’s tours.

One of the great players to don the British Lions sweater was Gordon Brown, also known as Broon frae’ Troon and stood at six-foot, five-inches. He was the only player to play in both of the British Lions tours to New Zealand in the 1970s, where he scored an amazing eight tries.

Competing in one tour, he has the honor of captaining the British and Irish Lions in Australia in 1989, as well as playing in the 1991 Rugby World Cup. He is the only Lions captain in the 20th century to captain his team to a tour championship, after losing the first test of the tour.

Considered to by many to be the greatest player to ever play the game of rugby. He played ten times for the British Lions, including on the legendary 1971 Lions, which went unbeaten in the series in New Zealand, and for the unbeaten side in South Africa.

In a poll done by Rugby World magazine in 2003, he was declared the greatest player of all time and in 2007 he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II.

Gibson toured five times with the British Lions, as well as 12 tests, including being part of the legendary 1971 Lions . He became the first ever replacement in international rugby history when he replaced Barry John in 1968 in South Africa.

Irvine played in three tours for the British Lions, in South Africa (1974), New Zealand (1977) and South Africa (1980). He is considered to be the greatest fullback to ever come out of Scotland due to his blistering pace from the back, which became his trademark. Many polls done recently have shown him to be Scotland’s greatest player and he is considered to be the best attacking fullbacks of the modern era.

He has been inducted into the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame and the International Rugby Hall of Fame.

These men have proven to be legends in their game, with some being considered the greatest to ever to play the game of rugby. It is of little surprise that so many fans clamor to get rugby tickets for British Lions’ games. For many, the chance to see amazing players like Andy Irvine is well-worth the price of rugby tickets.
